Passenger Lists Available at your Fingertips
Immigrants to the New World, 1600s-1800s
(CD 170)

Reviewed by Marthe Arends

This CD contains the images of each page from five Genealogical Publishing Company books: New World Immigrants I, New World Immigrants II, Emigrants to Pennsylvania, 1641-1819, Immigrants to the Middle Colonies, and Passengers to America.

The books themselves are a collection of articles from a variety of genealogical publications such as The New England Historical and Genealogical Register (NEHGR), The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, The American Genealogist, The National Genealogical Society Quarterly, The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine, The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, and many others.

Genealogists who search through passenger lists will be interested in this CD — the introduction mentions that "almost all articles identified by Harold Lancour in his celebrated Bibliography of Ship Passenger Lists, 1538-1825 can be found [here]."

There are over 58,000 individuals mentioned on the CD: people who arrived in the New England and Mid-Atlantic area from 1572 to 1878. Information contained about each individual varies; when searching for my ancestors I found information on occupation, place of origin, naturalization information, ship's information (name of captain, ship, dates), and the names and ages of spouses and children.

Included in each book are a comprehensive list of sources, index of names, and all but one book has an index of ship's names as well — of course, you can also search all of the books at once using the Search Expert or the comprehensive (all volumes) name index.

Immigrants to the New World is a wonderful addition to Genealogy.com's collection of GPC-based CDs. A quick check of the book catalog at the GPC site shows that the books purchased separately would cost over $100, so the price is a definite plus! The CDs are viewable on either an IBM compatible computer or Power Macintosh.
