An Image of Early Virginia
Virginia Colonial Records, 1600s-1700s
(CD 503)
Reviewed by Marthe Arends

By now most everyone who reads my reviews knows how I feel about putting images of books available for easy access — I love it! The ability to quickly access and search books which might be out of a researcher's budget, too bulky to carry around, or simply out of print and unobtainable is one of the best reasons to research using these types of materials. Users can print relevant sections of the book, search the multiple volumes at once with the merest flick of a finger, and yet have the ability to treat the resource as they would a book by turning to specific volumes and page numbers, allowing the reader to browse through the volumes as they would a hard copy book. The only thing that's missing is the lovely smell of ink on pristine paper!

The latest Virginia resource to be produced with the joint effort of Genealogy.com and Genealogical Publishing Company (GPC) is a wonderful resource for researchers who are looking for difficult to find information in three areas: land records (including those lands granted under the headright system), militia lists, and early immigrant settlers.

This CD contains images of fifteen books printed by GPC in recent years, and the information contained in those books features more than 200,000 individuals. Books included on the CD are:

  • Early Virginia Immigrants, 1623-1666, by George Cabell Greer
  • Some Emigrants to Virginia, compiled by W. G. Stanard (2nd edition)
  • Virginia Colonial Abstracts, Volumes I-III, by Beverley Fleet
  • Virginia Gleanings in England: Abstracts of 17th and 18th Century English Wills..., by Lothrop Withington
  • Colonial Records of Virginia, originally published by the U.S. Senate
  • The Colonial Virginia Register, by William G. and Mary Newton Stanard
  • English Duplicates of Lost Virginia Records, by Louis des Cognets, Jr.
  • Personal Names in Hening's Statutes at Large, by Joseph J. Casey
  • Cavaliers and Pioneers: Abstracts of Virginia Land Patents and Grants, Volume I, by Nell Marion Nugent
  • Quit Rents of Virginia, 1704, by Annie Laurie Wright Smith
  • List of the Colonial Soldiers of Virginia, by H. J. Eckenrode
  • Virginia Colonial Militia, Volume II, edited by William Armstrong Crozier
  • Virginia's Colonial Soldiers, by Lloyd DeWitt Bockstruck

Each book contains its original foreword, introduction, and index (when applicable), allowing researchers to utilize the Family Archive as they would any reference book. Every name found in the books is included in an electronic index, which makes searching for individuals a snap, although users are limited to searching by a person's name, book, or page number. The introduction contains a brief explanation of the headright system, and details about what information is contained in each volume found within the CD.

This CD is an excellent resource for researchers who are interested in locating information on early Virginia settlers, and I highly recommend it as a great addition to personal and institutional research libraries.
