This census index contains data for more than 1,800,000 individuals,
extracted from the 1900 census for various parts of Connecticut,
Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont.
Unfortunately, nowhere in the introduction or documentation is
there a list of which specific counties are included. The introduction
does contain a disclaimer that the data is comprised of "an index
to portions of the 1900 federal census." That's an important point
for researchers to note depending on their needs, without
a list of counties the CD may not be useful for many researchers.
I recommend utilizing the Family Tree Maker FamilyFinder Index
to locate possible individuals of interest who may be found in
this resource.
It is also important that researchers realize that the data contained
is abstracted from the census records, and as such is subject
to transcription errors, typos, and illegible handwriting on the
original census microfilms. The introduction does a nice job of
bringing to the user's attention the various woes involved in
using a transcribed index, including information about census
enumerators, phonetic spellings, cultural spellings, transcriber's
errors such as extra or missing letters, etc. You'll typically
find the following information within this resource:
- Individual's name
- Residence
- County
- Location within the county
- Census microfilm roll and page number
