Every genealogist is familiar with the frustration and woes connected
with researching immigrant ancestors it's difficult to
find passenger list and naturalization records, to know where
to search for court records, to unearth indenture records, to
track down oaths of allegiance, to search land records, or to
find information in newspapers that pertains to your immigrant
ancestor, and yet all of these sources (and more!) were used by
David Dobson in his volumes concerning Scottish immigrants to
the U.S., Canada, and the West Indies.
This CD contains information for approximately 70,000 immigrants,
detailed in 16 volumes by David Dobson. You'll find indexed images
from the following volumes:
- Directory of Scots Banished to the American Plantations,
1650-1775
- Directory of Scots in the Carolinas, 1680-1830
- Directory of Scottish Settlers in North America, 1625-1825,
Volumes I-VII
- The Original Scots Colonists of Early America, 1612-1783
- The Original Scots Colonists of Early America, Supplement,
1607-1707
- The Original Scots Colonists, Caribbean Supplement, 1611-1707
- Scots in the USA and Canada
- Scots in the West Indies, 1707-1857
- Scots on the Chesapeake
- Scottish Soldiers in Colonial America
The sources Mr. Dobson used in gathering the information contained
in the volumes is amazing the following is a partial list
of the sources he consulted:
- ship passenger lists
- government serial publications
- periodical articles
- family histories
- contemporary newspapers
- Scottish Record Office documents
- Services of Heirs
- Register of Testaments of the Commissariat of Edinburgh
- Register of Deeds (which recorded any document of import,
not just deeds)
- printed volumes
- manuscripts
- church records
- burgess rolls
- probate records
- state records
