Volumes of Virginia Records
Colonial Virginia Source Records, 1600s-1700s
(CD 510)
Reviewed by Marthe Arends

Primary sources are, as any genealogist knows, the thing to search when looking for family information. But how do you find primary resources when you live on the other side of the country (or world, if you are researching in another country)? One way is to use the resources of local Family History Centers to view available books, microfilms, and microfiche; another way is to order every book concerning the area you are researching. Most researchers have limited time to use the former strategy, and can't afford the latter, which is why I believe this Family Archive will particularly delight Virginia researchers.

This CD contains the images of ten volumes originally published by the Genealogical Publishing Company — that's ten volumes which include primary resources like marriage records, military records, court records, tax lists, as well as abstracted and secondary source information such as newspaper abstracts, family histories, and local histories. Approximately 353,000 individuals are mentioned.

The volumes included on this CD are:

  • Early Quaker Records in Virginia by Miles White, Jr.

  • Genealogical Abstracts from 18th Century Virginia Newspapers by Robert K. Headley, Jr.

  • Gleanings of Virginia History: An Historical and Genealogical Collection, Largely from Original Sources by William F. Booghe

  • Historical Collections of Virginia by Henry Howe (originally published in 1845)

  • Index to Obituary Notices in the "Richmond Enquirer" from May 9, 1804, through 1828, and the "Richmond Whig" from January 1824 through 1838 by H. R. McIlwaine

  • Marriages of Some Virginia Residents, 1607-1800 by Dorothy Ford Wulfeck

  • Virginia Court Records in Southwestern Pennsylvania: Records of the District of West August and Ohio and Yohogania Counties, Virginia 1775-1780

  • Virginia Tax Payers, 1782-87 by Augusta B. Fothergill and John M. Naugle

  • Virginia Wills and Administrations, 1632-1800 by Clayton Torrence

  • Virginia Wills before 1799: A Complete Abstract Register of all Names Mentioned in over 600 Recorded Wills by William Montgomery Clemens

As is usual with these image CDs, each volume's original title page, table of contents, and index (if available) are included for each book. One of the reasons I love these image CDs so much is that you literally hold an electronic copy of the volumes — everything from the first to the last page is included, so you can print out or browse just those areas you want.

The information found for each individual varies greatly depending on the volume; browsing through the CD I saw diverse types of information — everything from payrolls, to election poll results, military histories, family genealogies, bible transcripts, marriage records, minutes of court, deed records, will abstracts, and much more.

Although not all of the information on this CD is from primary sources (notably the genealogies), it is well worth the investment to have all ten of these valuable books on one searchable resource. If you have Virginia ancestors, you'll want to take a look at this new title!
